Experience the best of New Zealand’s North Island including the Bay of Islands and Rotorua.
This 8-day trip is all about the picturesque highlights of New Zealand’s North Island. Explore the geothermal sites of Rotorua, sail the Bay of Islands and explore the shores of Lake Taupo.
Starting in Auckland, head north through Waipoura Kauri Forest Reserve en route to the Bay of Islands. In addition to being one of New Zealand’s most historic regions, the Bay is a prime spot for dolphin and whale watching. A cruise on the Bay takes you out to the Hole in the Rock, one of its most distinctive geological formations.
Return to Auckland for your onward journey to the Waitomo Caves, known for their large population of glow worms. You’ll journey on to Rotorua, New Zealand’s most active geothermal laboratory. Wander through geysers and mud pools, then in the evening enjoy a traditional Hangi feast with the local Maori.
Before leaving Rotorua, visit the Agrodome for a glimpse of New Zealand farming life. You’ll have the opportunity to see sheep shearing, dog trials and an animal nursery. You may even opt for a flight over the active White Island volcano at your own expense.
Lake Taupo is Australasia’s largest freshwater lake and a favourite getaway spot. Stop in on the way to your final destination, Wellington. New Zealand’s compact capital is an ideal walking city, packed with museums and a thriving café culture. With some of the country’s best wineries on its doorstep, it’s also a good opportunity to enjoy an evening of fine dining before you depart.
